Sample Course Plan

Our sample course plan is designed to help you plan your course schedule. If you would like to deviate from the sample course plan, please discuss your plans with your MSACST advisor to ensure that you will be on track to complete your degree on your schedule.

First Year (non-thesis and thesis tracks)

First Quarter (10 credits)

  • 2 core courses (6 credits)
  • CHEM 600B (3 credits)
  • CHEM 590C (1 credit)

Second Quarter (13 credits)

  • 2 core courses (6 credits)
  • 1 elective course (3 credits)
  • CHEM 600B (3 credits)
  • CHEM 590C (1 credit)

Third quarter (13 credits)

  • 2 core courses (6 credits)
  • 1 elective course (3 credits)
  • CHEM 600B (3 credits)
  • CHEM 590C (1 credit)

Completing these courses will allow you to meet all the requirements for the non-thesis track. This includes a total of 36 credits of the following:

  • 18 credits of core courses (6 courses)
  • 6 credits of other 500-level CHEM courses (2 courses)
  • 3 credits of seminar (CHEM 590C; Please note that students can enroll in only 1 credit of CHEM 590C each quarter)
  • 9 credits of graduate research (CHEM 600B)

Second Year (thesis track only)

To complete the thesis track, you need to propose a timeline to complete your thesis research, write your thesis and defend your thesis. This will typically take three quarters. Your proposed timeline must be approved by both your research advisor and your MSACST advisor. While conducting your thesis research, you must complete 12 credits of CHEM 700B. You need to take at least one credit of 700B during each quarter that you perform any research activities on campus.

Completing the first and second year course plan will allow you to meet all the requirements for the thesis track. This includes the completion of 48 credits and the following:

  • Satisfy all requirements for the non-thesis track
  • Minimum of 12 credits of CHEM 700B (Master’s thesis)
  • Successfully defend thesis
